Job Description Summary:
Are you a skilled maintenance technician with a passion for ensuring the proper functioning of critical infrastructure? The City of Columbia is seeking a Utility Maintenance Mechanic II to join our team! In this role, you'll perform skilled maintenance and repair of our wastewater treatment plant and sewer pump stations, using a variety of heavy equipment and power tools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and repair plant facilities and equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Provide training to coworkers on repair and maintenance tasks to enhance team capabilities.
  • Diagnose mechanical defects and efficiently repair devices to minimize downtime.
  • Operate power tools and heavy equipment in maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform electrical and plumbing work, including replacing fixtures, switches, receptacles, wiring, faucets, valves, and lines.
  • Assist in the upgrading of plant equipment to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with supervisors or lead mechanics to order parts and materials necessary for repairs.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
While this position does not have direct supervisory authority, you'll provide guidance and training to others as needed.

Your interactions and contributions will have a significant impact on the organization, ensuring the efficient operation of vital infrastructure.

Fiscal Responsibility:
Limited fiscal responsibility may include assisting in data collection for budget allocations and monitoring division budget and expenditures.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair.

Licenses or Certifications:
Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in building trades.
  • Skill in conducting electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems related to plant maintenance.
  • Proficiency in communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.

Work Environment:
Be prepared for frequent exposure to various environmental conditions and hazards, including outdoor work and exposure to moving mechanical parts.

Hours/Days:
Enjoy a consistent schedule, Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, with infrequent after-hours work expected.

Starting Salary:
Competitive starting salary ranging from $22.47 to $32.80 per hour, commensurate with experience.
