Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Director of Athletics (AD) is responsible for the leadership, management and complete oversight of all aspects of the athletic programs at Eastern Kentucky University, including 18 NCAA Division I. The portfolio of responsibilities for this position includes management for the following areas: coaches, staff, and student-athlete recruitment and development; budgeting and financial management; compliance with all applicable federal, state, NCAA, conference, and University policies, procedures, and regulations; facility management; corporate sponsorships, ticket sales and fundraising; marketing, media, and public relations; and the implementation of strategies to achieve University and departmental goals.

The AD must be committed to leading an athletics program that expects the highest levels of achievement academically, athletically, and operational integrity. The AD must have strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; a high level of integrity; a demonstrated record of leadership; proven analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities; an understanding of conflict management and negotiation strategies; the ability to build consensus among diverse groups and adapt to change; and a vision for propelling Eastern Kentucky University's athletic programs into an ever-changing, dynamic future.

This position is considered an executive level position and shall represent the University as appropriate on committees both within and external to the institution.

Above all, the AD will be dedicated to the cause of student-athletes and their personal and academic success.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Master's Degree is required in a relevant field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: Five years of directly related and progressively responsible experience in athletics administration, including experience at a managerial or executive level. Other relevant executive-level experience may be considered for up to two years of the required experience or education.

Job Duties:
  • 20% - Provides administrative direction, evaluation, and oversight for all athletic programs, staff, facilities, and activities within the Athletic Department. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Ensures that all intercollegiate athletic programs and activities are compliant with state and federal laws, University policies, and conference regulations. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Directs and oversees the preparation of the Athletic budget and approves all expenditures of funds from the budget accounts assigned to the units within the Department. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Serves as the primary spokesperson for the intercollegiate athletic program and coordinates with the Development Office on fundraising campaigns and initiatives by building positive relationships with fans, donors, and corporate partners. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Completes special assignments, acts as an advocate for the department, and completes all other duties as assigned and/or necessary to ensure efficient operation of the Athletic Department. - (Essential)
