GENERAL DESCRIPTION


Performs responsible work supervising and working with several crews involved in custodial services for assigned Roanoke County buildings. Performs custodial work, prepares weekly work assignments, reviews time cards and timesheets, maintains adequate cleaning supplies and materials for assigned buildings, and works closely with contracted custodial or cleaning crews. Performs other duties as assigned.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises and schedules the work of custodians working in County buildings
  • Provides training for employees to include, but not limited to, the safe and proper use of materials and equipment such as chemicals, vacuums, buffers, and carpet extractors
  • Monitors work of contracted custodial or cleaning crews employed by the County
  • Maintains records relating to the departmental inventory, equipment and employee data
  • Inspects work in progress and upon completion for adherence to standards
  • Coordinates interviews and recommends hiring of new employees
  • Conducts evaluations and performance plans for employees under his or her supervision, with assistance from the Facilities Manager
  • Keep time sheets and attendance records
  • Conducts employee orientation for the custodial section
  • Receives and investigates complaints
  • Requisitions materials and supplies and does related paperwork
  • Attends meetings and seminars to keep abreast of changes in the maintenance field
  • Assists employees in unusual or difficult situations
  • Prepares various periodic reports related to the custodial section
  • Deliver supplies to assigned areas
  • Supervises cleanup crews during emergency conditions related to storms, flooding, and other disasters
  • Communicates frequently with assigned supervisor
NON ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Inspects major facilities on a daily basis and a minimum of twice a week on other locations
  • Assists custodians in performing cleaning tasks
  • Cleans assigned areas during period of staff absence

REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES


Education
Required: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience
Required: Considerable experience in custodial work
Preferred: Several year's experience in supervision

Certifications/ Licenses

Required: Valid Virginia driver's license with good driving record
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of equipment and methods used in cleaning and maintaining buildings and of safety practices used in custodial services
  • Skill in planning, organizing, scheduling and monitoring the work of others
  • Ability to follow procedures and keep records and reports in an accurate manner
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and public
  • Ability to perform manual labor
  • Skill in the use of a personal computer including MicroSoft Office or similar software
  • Ability to utilize PC based work order systems
Additional Requirements
Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results. Good physical condition. Must pass a post offer physical examination. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description. Must be able to work varied shifts as assigned.
