Description
The School of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts (PVFA) at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time, tenured Professor of Guitar Performance with a nine-month academic appointment beginning Fall 2023.
The school and the Dance, Music, and Theatre Performance Section seek an individual with expertise in guitar performance. The competitive applicant will have experience teaching guitar lessons in the university setting and leading an ensemble (genre open). Preference will be given to candidates who teach and perform in a variety of styles (classical, folk, popular) and diverse genres (such as jazz, Latin American/Caribbean, African, or other global genres). Candidates who can teach courses about historical and cultural contexts of instrumental performance practices are particularly encouraged to apply.
Candidates are expected to teach undergraduate courses in music (including individual instruction, ensembles, and lecture or seminar courses), assist with the development of a music program with an expected start date of Fall 2024, and contribute to academic and professional service. Candidates must have a well-developed research/creative works agenda that will inform and advance the field and gain visibility through peer-reviewed academic publications, juried creative works or both.
The School of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts is a new school within the Texas A&M University System and has a diverse and dynamic mission with over 60 faculty and 15 staff members and a projected exponential growth in the next five years. The school was formed from three departments/programs spread across the university: the Department of Visualization, the Department of Performance Studies, and the Dance Science program. The mission of the school places a heavy emphasis on faculty and student collaboration and interdisciplinary work in both scholarly and creative research. Texas A&M University leadership has charged PVFA with developing innovative research and creative works, public performances, and degree offerings at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels that build upon our strength in merging art and science as well as the traditional fields of music, dance, art, and theater. The school is projected to move into a new, $175 million state-of-the-art visual and performing arts center with construction slated to begin in 2024.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a terminal degree in music (DMA, DM or PhD.). Preference will be given to candidates with relevant professional experience. A strong commitment to effective teaching, student recruitment, committee service, and professional development is expected. Candidates must hold a well-developed research/creative works agenda through peer-reviewed academic publications, juried creative works or both.
