General Definition of Work
The Maintenance Specialist I for the Public Works Downtown division performs intermediate manual and semiskilled work maintaining the cleanliness and repairing the furnishings of downtown streetscapes and trail sections in the downtown area and performing street and parking lot maintenance work. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Maintenance Specialist Foreman.

- Performs general downtown maintenance duties which include:
- Repairing benches/trash cans/landscape barrels
- Replacing brickwork
- Picking up and disposing of trash and other waste on the streets/trails/sidewalk areas of downtown
- Maintaining the appearance of the trash corrals, empties trash and recycling cans
- Maintains the appearance of the streets/trails/sidewalk areas of downtown by using a sidewalk scrubber
- Helps direct citizens, business owners, and visitors with their downtown questions and needs from the town staff
- Sets up and takes down signage for downtown community events; cleans and restores area after events
- Cleans Farmer's Market/park area
- Helps maintains downtown landscaped places such as downtown planters and parking lots; runs irrigation at Market Square Park when needed
- Performs snow removal responsibilities such as shoveling snow, salting and clearing walks and stairs in the downtown during snow events
- Assists with other projects and related work as apparent or assigned
- General knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance work
- General knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of the standard building trades
- Knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the position
- Ability to understand and follow instructions
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, business owners, visitors, and associates

Physical Requirements
- This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
- Work frequently standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions
- Work has standard vision requirements
- No special vocal communication skills are required
- No special hearing perception is required
- Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
- Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)
