Position overview
Position title: Josephson Lab Junior Specialist
Salary range: $51,300

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: September 1, 2024. Degree must be in hand by June 30, 2024 for employment that begins on September 1, 2024 and beyond.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description


The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position Josephson Lab Junior Specialist. Under the direction of Colleen Josephson, the junior specialist will support and assist in research related to low-power energy harvesting and applications, specifically with soil microbial fuel cells. The junior specialist will also assist with overall lab management and will be responsible for the design and implementation of embedded systems for monitoring soil microbial fuel cell experiments. Other responsibilities may include overseeing field deployments at the UCSC farm and development of low-power monitoring equipment.

The junior specialist will also make scholarly contributions to the research program through reading primary literature, preparing and/or editing scientific manuscripts, and/or presenting at lab meetings. The position will require the Junior Specialist to learn new techniques and implement protocols; demonstrate strong attention to detail; exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills; exercise good time management and problem-solving skills; and work effectively in a team environment. Furthermore, soil microbial fuel cell research is very cross-disciplinary, the candidate will need to demonstrate experience with, or the capability to adapt and work with new scientific fields.

  • Experience with soil microbial fuel cell field deployments.
  • Authorship or co-authorship on microbial fuel cell publications.
  • Lab management experience.
  • Experience working with experts from a wide range of scientific fields.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in electrical engineering, or a field relevant to the advertised position. by the appointment start date. It is anticipated that the degree will be in hand by June 30, 3024.
  • At least one year of experience with low-power energy harvesting research.
  • At least one year of experience with soil microbial fuel cell research.
  • At least one year of experience with embedded systems engineering.
