The VAC is a 13,000 square-foot gallery situated in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. The mission of the VAC is to provide a platform for artists, curators, and educators to experiment, test ideas, and take risks. Through their exhibitions and public programs, the VAC aims to spark generative conversations about art and contemporary society. The VAC is always free and open to the public.

Purpose:

The VAC Director works closely with faculty and both graduate and undergraduate students in support of the academic missions in the Studio, Art History, and Art Education units of the Department of Art and Art History. The position entails the development of exhibitions and programming that complement curricula, engage the contemporary art world, and activate members of the department, college, university, and community. The director oversees several staff members, as well as graduate student fellows who act as educators, preparators, and curators.

Responsibilities:

• Responsible for directing the operations of the Visual Arts Center in the Department of Art and Art History including budgetary and financial affairs. Works with staff, artists, lenders, and other partners on researching, planning, organizing, and implementing exhibitions of student work, including annual BFA and MFA degree exhibitions in Studio Art, as well as VAC-generated exhibitions and artist commissions. • The Director leads a team that includes a Chief Preparator, Assistant Curator, several part-time positions: Assistant Preparator, Administrative Associate, Gallery Coordinator, installation crew, and 1-3 graduate students from Art History, Studio Art, and/or Art Education. Responsible for hiring, onboarding, performance management, and succession planning for team. Director works with a consulting faculty committee, while reporting directly to the department chair.

• Director engages in grant writing and grant management. Works with the College Development team to cultivate donor circle and build endowments.

Required Qualifications:

• Candidates must possess at least an MA in art history, an MFA in Studio Art, or a graduate degree in a closely related discipline that indicates a depth and breadth of knowledge and expertise in contemporary art.

• Museum or gallery experience with a proven track record of producing compelling exhibitions and public programs.

• Grant writing/fundraising experience.

• Excellent organizational skills; detail-oriented work habits; excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience teaching in a university or college environment. as well as fundraising experience.

Salary Range: $73,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions:

This position is eligible for a Hybrid Flexible Work Arrangement (remote + on-campus).
