In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

The Wisconsin DNR has two LTE (Limited Term Employee) positions available in our Madison, Wisconsin office: 

  • Forestry Associate Outreach Specialist
  • Reforestation Outreach Specialist

The intention is to hire one candidate to perform both positions. This dual LTE appointment is comprised of two 20-hour positions for an expected total work schedule of 40 hours per week. See below for more information on the available positions.

Position Summary

Position 1,

The Division of Forestry Associate Outreach Specialist is responsible for supporting and monitoring statewide forestry outreach efforts with internal staff and external partners. This position is responsible for publishing and editing the division internal newsletter and working with forestry programs to support their social media content development, publication updates, digital asset management, and internal virtual events.

Duties:
45% Internal communications systems support and content development
Edit, develop, and post content for division’s weekly internal newsletter on Microsoft SharePoint’s publishing platform. Coordinate and implement internal communication plans for the division. Gather, edit, and post photos and videos to complement articles. Communicate and coordinate with division staff to ensure timely publishing schedules.

45% External communication and message development for partners and the public
Work with program specialist to draft, coordinate, and track social media posts in collaboration with the department’s Office of Communications. Edit and post content to be shared via GovDelivery. Coordinate submission of external content to the Office of Communications for review and approval. Support core forestry programs across the division to build increased public awareness of the importance of Wisconsin’s forests and the division’s work. Gather, edit, and post photos and videos to complement articles. Track forestry outreach efforts to support the division and department outreach planning.

10% Assist and support division other outreach efforts
Plan, schedule and provide support for virtual events as needed. Coordinate publication management (guiding redesign/reprinting processes, tracking expenditures of funds, filling publication orders, managing publication spreadsheet). Managing digital assets including uploading photos submitted by field staff and keeping publication library current.

Position 2,

This position will provide outreach and education support for the Reforestation Program and the Forest Products Services Program in the Applied Forestry Bureau of the Division of Forestry.

55% Reforestation communications systems support and content development.
Coordinate and implement the communication plan for the reforestation program. Edit and develop external articles for the reforestation program. Prepare and send GovDelivery messages. Gather, edit, and compile reforestation reports including graphics and photos to complement reports. Develop and implement an outreach plan to promote reforestation to unengaged landowners. Assist in creating reforestation educational and training materials and videos for internal and external use.

30% Tree Planting for Climate Change Mitigation Outreach
Develop outreach materials focused on the role of tree planting in climate change mitigation. Provide communications support for the Division of Forestry climate change mitigation initiatives. Develop and maintain an online site to support Wisconsin's Trillion Tree pledge.

15% Forest Products Team Communication and Outreach
Edit and post newsletter articles. Prepare and send GovDelivery messages. Prepare communication products for Forest Products Week and other events

Salary Information

These positions pay between $22.00 - $24.00 per hour. The positions are in the Forestry Specialist classification and are in pay schedule and range 15-03. 

Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan. 

Job Details

Limited Term Employment: This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.  

LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period. 

Residency Requirement: In order to be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have the following:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with experience in editing and proofreading
    • Experience using a wide range of outreach tools (print, web, presentations, social media, video, virtual meeting formats, and other media)
    • Strong technology skills (especially with SharePoint and Adobe Creative Suite)
    • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, meet deadlines and work effectively with teams and a diverse group of customers
    • Ability to organize diverse information for easy access and use by customers and the ability to translate technical and scientific information into layperson language
